1. Prayer for North Korea (1) (Ahead of the 2025 Seoul World Convention on North Korean Human Rights)
▶ Article Summary
A recent survey of the Korean church revealed the shocking fact that only 1.8% of Korean churches are actively involved in North Korea mission. North Korea is the most difficult country in the world to hear the Gospel, ranking 1st in the World Watch List for Christian Persecution (2025) and 1st in the Global Slavery Index (2023). The majority of North Korean residents do not receive state rations, and the sight of them starving or desperately clinging to life through jangmadang (informal markets) is beyond pitiful—it is horrific. One North Korean defector minister shared how deeply moved he was when he attended his first Sunday service in a South Korean church after arriving. However, he noted that for six months, the pastor never once spoke about their North Korean compatriots or mission, nor was North Korea included in the representative prayers. He said it was deeply saddening that North Korean residents were being marginalized and ignored even by the South Korean church, their own people. The Esther Prayer Movement holds 365 days of all-night prayer, and every Monday, they invite North Korean defectors as speakers to hear their testimonies and pray for the spiritual and physical salvation of their North Korean people. This brings to mind the testimony of Suzanne Scholte (President of the Defense Forum Foundation, Chairman of the North Korea Freedom Coalition) when she visited the Esther Prayer Movement: “Break my heart with the things that break Your heart, O God!” After praying this, she began rescuing North Korean defectors who had been fleeing in suffering since 1996, and loudly calling out to the world about their trampled human rights. The 2025 Seoul World Convention on North Korean Human Rights will be held from October 22nd to 24th, with participants from 30 countries worldwide. We earnestly pray that this convention will expose the suffering and tragic reality of our North Korean people to the world, and specifically that the conscience of the Korean church and the people of the Republic of Korea will be broken. ▶ Article Summary
Reports indicate that the border security forces are further intensifying their crackdown on the illegal use of Chinese mobile phones. In particular, the security forces warned, “Be aware that if you are caught now, both you and your family will face legal punishment, and in severe cases, you could be executed by firing squad.” The security forces received an instruction from the Ministry of State Security to “Find every single user of Chinese mobile phones by the 4th quarter, leaving none behind,” and a message was also circulated stating, “Possessing a Chinese mobile phone still proves that you are a spy threatening state security.” Consequently, residents in border areas like Hyesan city are living in an “atmosphere of fear that is distinctly different from before,” due to the strengthened crackdown by the security forces and the “warning of execution by firing squad.” A source in North Hamgyong Province reported, “Rumors are spreading that actual executions will take place soon, given the warning of execution by firing squad, causing extreme tension among residents.” This measure is analyzed as a strong intention by the North Korean authorities to completely block the inflow of external information, which is the biggest threat to the maintenance of the North Korean regime.

▶ Article Summary
In a message to President Xi Jinping in response to his congratulatory message for the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea, Kim Jong Un stated that he would “actively propel the dynamic development of the DPRK-China friendly relations in the joint struggle to realize the socialist cause with Chinese comrades,” and “contribute to promoting the well-being of the people of the two countries and safeguarding regional and world stability.” President Xi, in his congratulatory message to Chairman Kim on the 10th, had previously stated that “The Chinese side is willing to strengthen strategic communication with the DPRK side,” and “make a positive contribution to world peace, stability, development, and prosperity.” Kim's phrase “safeguarding world stability” and Xi's “world peace and stability” are frequently appearing recently, which is interpreted as the two countries aligning to form a multipolar international order in response to the US-led international order. This trend appears to be accelerating following Chairman Kim's attendance at the Chinese Victory Day military parade on the 3rd of last month and the North Korea-China summit on the 4th of last month, the first in about six years. ▶ Article Summary
64 Koreans who were detained by immigration authorities in Cambodia for involvement in online fraud crimes were repatriated to South Korea on a chartered plane on the morning of the 18th. As soon as they disembarked, all 64 were escorted as suspects to the competent police stations for investigation into their criminal allegations. 59 of them were arrested during a crackdown operation on the fraud complex by the Cambodian authorities, and the remaining five reported themselves and were rescued from the criminal complex. They are suspected of involvement in voice phishing or romance scams in the Cambodian criminal complexes known as 'wenchi'. This is the third time that Korean criminals have been collectively repatriated from overseas by chartered plane, and it is the largest scale ever repatriated at one time. Recently, incidents of Koreans being confined or murdered in Cambodia have been occurring one after another, with reports of kidnapping and confinement of Koreans in Cambodia sharply increasing from 4 cases in 2021, 17 cases in 2023, to 220 cases last year, and 330 cases by August 2025.

▶ Article Summary Unofficial house churches in China are facing a series of crackdowns. Recently, Pastor Ezra Jin (Jin Mingli) was forcibly taken and detained by police from his home in Beihai, Guangxi Province. Approximately 30 members of Zion Church in Beijing were arrested on charges of ‘disturbing social order through gatherings.’ Zion Church, a house church established in Beijing in 2007, has faced repeated pressure, expulsions, and dispersion of its members for refusing to join government-approved religious organizations. Following the arrest of church leaders in 2018, measures such as church closure and freezing of bank accounts have been implemented one after another in 2025. The Chinese government is further intensifying pressure on unofficial churches and house churches based on new regulations for religious affairs. Although China's constitution guarantees freedom of religion, in reality, it only permits religious organizations controlled by the Communist Party. Online services and sharing of Bible content are also prohibited, restricting house churches both online and offline. The international human rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) analyzed, “This incident shows how fragile freedom of belief is in China,” and “Religious freedom in China exists on paper in the constitution, but in reality, it is completely controlled. The detention of Pastor Jin Mingli is a signal that criticism of the system or independent worship will not be tolerated.” Zion Church, through an emergency representative prayer letter on October 11th, urged, “Now is the time to maintain faith and obey God even amidst persecution,” and “There is no crown without a cross, and no glory without persecution. Let us firmly hold onto our faith even in suffering.”

▶ Article Summary
“South Korea, one of the countries with the lowest birth rates on earth, needs to have more children above all else. I believe the low birth rate issue is almost the sole problem causing South Korea’s (economic) stagnation.” This was the answer given by Joel Mokyr (79), a professor at Northwestern University and this year's Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences laureate, when asked by a Korean media outlet about ‘how South Korea can continue to grow’ at his award celebration press conference. He also suggested ‘openness to external ideas’ as a solution to South Korea’s aging population, advising that the country “must remain open so that the influx of new ideas and innovation is not restricted.” Professor Mokyr also emphasized, “My advice to countries like South Korea is to maintain freedom of the press and the freedom to hold free elections.” He assessed, “As you can see from the news, the best people haven’t always become politicians, and the country has faced its share of difficulties,” yet “South Korea has achieved a successful democracy.” Furthermore, he praised South Korea's economic growth as a ‘miracle,’ adding, “In the 1950s, South Korea's per capita income was very low, but now it has become one of the wealthiest countries in the world.” [Oct. 14, 2025, Seoul Shinmun / See Article: https://buly.kr/EzjZpAT ]
