1. Kim Jong-un Attends New Town Completion Ceremony with Daughter Ju-ae... "Sorry for Only Now Providing Modern Housing"
On the 15th, the birthday of Kim Il-sung, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un personally attended the completion ceremony of the 3rd phase of the Hwaseong district, one of the "New Town" areas in Pyongyang. He was accompanied by his daughter, Kim Ju-ae. Also attending the ceremony were key officials including Prime Minister Park Tae-sung, Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea Kim Deok-hoon, along with other senior party officials, government leaders, workers, builders, and Pyongyang city laborers. According to the Korean Central News Agency, Kim Jong-un expressed his regret for only now providing modern homes for the people and mentioned that seeing the citizens filled with joy and excitement had strengthened his resolve to take on more responsibilities for the people.
In January 2021, North Korea announced a plan to build 50,000 housing units over five years, with 10,000 units to be completed each year in Pyongyang. Following the completion of Songhwa Street in 2022, the first and second phases of the Hwaseong district, comprising 10,000 units each, were completed in 2023 and 2024, respectively. The third phase, also with 10,000 units, has now been completed. Kim Jong-un has consistently visited the construction sites, showing his attachment to the project. It is believed that North Korea chose Kim Il-sung's birthday for this ceremony to maximize the effect of consolidating the regime and soothing public sentiment.

Article Summary
In the first quarter of this year, 38 North Korean defectors entered South Korea. A government official from the Ministry of Unification reported that 37 females and 1 male made up the 38 defectors who entered between January and March. The cumulative number of defectors in South Korea now stands at 34,352. The number of defectors in the first quarter of this year is fewer than the 43 in the first quarter of 2024, but more than the 34 in the first quarter of 2023. The majority of defectors, about 20 in their 20s and 30s, accounted for more than half of the new arrivals, and the Ministry of Unification noted that this age group has consistently made up more than 50% of defectors entering South Korea. Most defectors entered South Korea after leaving North Korea before the country closed its borders due to COVID-19, spending time in third countries, with most having stayed abroad for more than five years.

Prayer Request:
“For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner, giving them food and clothing. And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt…” (Deuteronomy 10:17-19)
3. [Street Market Magnifier] In North Korea, Who Pumps Water for the Bathhouses?

Article Summary
When droughts begin, people in North Korea who make money from installing pump systems get busier. During severe droughts, digging and installing pump systems is necessary to ensure a steady supply of water, regardless of the season. This is why the demand for pump installations is particularly high in April and May, when the drought is at its worst. Recently, in apartment buildings, the pump systems are often installed at the entrance of the first-floor lobby, where plastic pipes connected to a diesel engine are used to pump groundwater up to the upper floors, such as the 5th floor or higher. Private bathhouses typically have at least three pump systems installed. Each pump system employs a pump worker who manually pumps groundwater to fill the bathhouse with water. These pump workers are paid twice the usual daily wage for general workers because of the physical demands of the job. As a result, young, strong individuals are typically hired as pump workers. North Korean defectors who have settled in South Korea often say they are grateful that they no longer need to worry about water, heating, or rice in South Korea. They wish that North Korea would one day experience a life where hot water flows simply by turning on the faucet, making it a better place to live.
