Sep week4 Prayer for North Korea
1. Is Admiring China's Progress Considered Reactionary Thought?
▶ Article Summary:
Recently, it has been reported that members of a youth brigade mobilized for flood recovery in the Sinuiju and Uiju regions of North Pyongan Province, North Korea, could not hide their envy toward China's development. Several brigade members commented, "China has really progressed, and such changes are enviable. I would like to live there." As a result, they were taken to the political department, forced to write self-criticism letters, and even subjected to security agency investigations. Many of those mobilized for the recovery efforts were visiting Sinuiju or Uiju for the first time due to strict control by the authorities. Witnessing the highly developed city of Dandong across the river in China left them in awe and envy. In contrast to the prosperous commercial and residential areas of Dandong, with a population of 700,000, Sinuiju appeared backward and underdeveloped. The Workers' Party and the security agencies reportedly control the youth brigade members, accusing them of "having bad thoughts" even if they just glance toward Dandong.

▶ Prayer Requests:
"Love and faithfulness keep a king safe; through love his throne is made secure." (Proverbs 20:28)
○Recently, youth brigade members mobilized for flood recovery in North Korea have expressed surprise and envy toward the vibrant cityscape of Dandong, China, across the Yalu River. In response, the North Korean authorities have classified such remarks as reactionary thought and are enforcing strict control. Lord, have mercy on our compatriots who live under the totalitarian regime of North Korea, where even freedom of speech and expression are treated as criminal acts.
○May the youth brigade members, who have witnessed the stark contrast between North Korea and the highly developed China, come to realize the truth behind the North Korean regime's deception, which falsely claims to be the greatest paradise on earth. Let the truth about the outside world and the gospel of Jesus reach the people of North Korea.
2. U.S. State Department Demands Immediate Release of South Korean Missionary Held in North Korea, Condemns Human Rights Violations
▶ Article Summary:
On September 19, Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, marked the 4,000th day of South Korean missionary Kim Jung-wook’s detainment in North Korea, calling for the release of Kim and other South Koreans held in the country. Miller criticized North Korea’s actions as a blatant attempt to suppress freedom of religion, silence individuals, and restrict access to external information. While the U.S. government has previously urged North Korea to release South Korean detainees, this is the first time an official statement has been issued directly from the State Department spokesperson. The move is seen as a result of the Yoon Suk Yeol administration’s continued efforts to build international consensus on this issue. In November 2022, during a summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the leaders of South Korea, the U.S., and Japan issued a joint statement supporting the immediate release of South Korean citizens detained in North Korea, marking the first time this issue was included in a joint declaration. On September 17, during a session at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, the U.S. also raised concerns about South Korean detainees, specifically mentioning Kim Jung-wook by name. To this day, North Korean authorities have not confirmed the whereabouts or the condition of Kim and five other South Koreans detained in the country.

▶ Prayer Requests:
"Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering." (Hebrews 13:3)
○On September 19, the 4,000th day of missionary Kim Jung-wook's detention in North Korea, both the South Korean government and the U.S. State Department issued statements calling for the release of all six South Koreans held by North Korea. Lord, strengthen the international solidarity urging their immediate release.
○Lord, protect the six South Koreans detained in North Korea, including the three missionaries (Kim Jung-wook, Kim Kuk-gi, and Choi Chun-gil). May they soon return to the embrace of their families and the South Korean church that eagerly awaits them.
○May the North Korean political prison camps be shut down, and may all underground church members and North Korean residents who are imprisoned be set free.
3. Central Party Cracks Down on Remittance Brokers, Heightening Tensions at the Border
▶ Article Summary:
Recently, the North Korean Workers' Party's Organization and Guidance Department has reportedly ordered security agencies in border regions such as North Hamgyong, Yanggang, Jagang, and North Pyongan provinces to intensify crackdowns on remittance brokers. From September to November, the crackdown will focus on brokers using illegal Chinese cell phones to transfer money, amidst suspicions that these brokers are not only facilitating money transfers but also leaking internal information through these phones, engaging in espionage activities. The Organization and Guidance Department warned that inspections could happen without notice, creating a tense atmosphere among the security agencies in these border areas. In response, remittance brokers are said to be switching SIM cards frequently to avoid detection when communicating with Chinese business contacts. Amidst the ongoing crackdown, brokers and some citizens who rely on these transfers are growing increasingly frustrated, accusing the state of tightening control without addressing their basic needs.

▶ Prayer Requests:
"He will defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy; He will crush the oppressor." (Psalm 72:4)
○North Korean authorities are intensifying their crackdown on remittance brokers in border regions. Lord, we pray that the channels through which defectors send financial support, external information, and the gospel to their families in North Korea will remain open.
○May the people of North Korea no longer need to rely on brokers to send money to their families. Raise up righteous leaders who will respect human life and rights, prioritize the well-being of citizens, and ensure their basic needs are met. We pray for the swift arrival of peaceful reunification under the banner of freedom and democracy, grounded in the gospel.
