“All my bones will say, ‘Lord, who is like you? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them.’” (Psalm 35:10)
ᅬ Lord, we lift up the North Korean construction workers who were sent back to their country for failing to meet their state-imposed quotas, who, just before their departure, gathered discarded items from a Russian apartment complex’s recycling bins. Russian locals viewed them with sympathy as they were forced to return home empty-handed after years of foreign labor under surveillance and control. Have mercy on these North Korean workers who must return to their homeland without a penny.
ᅬ We pray for the swift unification of the North and South under the principles of free democracy and a free-market economy, united by the gospel. May North Korean workers also experience freedom and prosperity, working in diverse industries where they are fairly compensated for their labor.
2. Why Did North Korea Send Imported Yarn and Crochet Hooks to Political Prison Camps?

North Korean trading companies are increasingly relying on prison labor to produce processed goods for export to China as a means of earning foreign currency. Recently, one of North Korea's large trading companies received such an order from China. According to a source from North Hamgyong Province, the Rason branch of the Chosun Shinhung Trading Company received a large order for handicrafts and has begun production. The source reported that all these orders will be fulfilled by prisoners in re-education camps and political prison camps. From the beginning of the contract with the Chinese side, it was agreed that the products would be manufactured by prisoners in North Korean detention facilities. The Rason branch of the Shinhung Trading Company is currently importing materials necessary for crocheting, such as crochet hooks ranging from 0.1 to 3mm in size and yarn in various colors. It is well-known that North Korean trading companies prefer to use prison labor because it incurs no labor costs and allows for easy management and supervision of the production process. Essentially, North Korean trading companies and the authorities are easily earning foreign currency through the forced labor of prisoners. The source noted that the current order for crocheted products is so large that the foreign currency revenue is expected to be significant, and that the production and export of processed goods using prison labor are likely to increase in the future.

“Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.” (Hebrews 13:3)
ᅬ It has been reported that 30% of North Korea's processed goods are produced through the forced labor of prisoners in re-education camps and political prison camps. Recently, the Rason branch of the Chosun Shinhung Trading Company received a large order of handicrafts from China, with the condition that they be produced by prisoners. Lord, have mercy on the North Korean prisoners who are living as modern-day slaves, enduring long hours of forced labor in these camps.
ᅬ Despite being a signatory to the UN Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, North Korea continues to commit human rights abuses, including illegal forced labor of prisoners. We pray that the international community will raise its voice in stronger criticism against the North Korean dictatorship, leading to real improvements in the human rights situation, including an end to slave labor.
ᅬ We pray for the swift end of North Korea's Juche ideology, Kim Jong-un's three-generation dictatorship, and the deification cult. May the political prison camps in North Korea be dismantled, and may all wrongfully imprisoned, including Christians, be set free.
3. Kim Jong-un Draws Attention by Using South Korean Expressions Instead of North Korean Terms
The North Korean Workers' Party's official newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported on August 10th that "Respected Comrade Kim Jong-un visited the flood-affected area in Uiju County, North Pyongan Province, on August 8th and 9th and took significant measures for disaster recovery." / Rodong Sinmun, News1

Kim Jong-un used numerous South Korean expressions during a speech in front of flood victims in Uiju County, North Pyongan Province, according to a report by Radio Free Asia on August 14th. This was the first time Kim Jong-un had given a speech directly to flood victims, contrasting with his usual behavior of berating and scolding officials. The speech, along with his visit to the flood-stricken area, has been broadcast repeatedly in North Korea. A source mentioned that people were more surprised by Kim Jong-un’s use of South Korean terms than the content of the speech itself. Instead of using words like “comrade” and “people,” he referred to them as “residents,” and instead of using the term “elderly” or “old person,” he used “elder.” He also referred to a “television” as “TV.” In North Korea, the terms “elderly” or “old person” are commonly used, with “grandfather” or “grandmother” as honorifics, and North Korean counter-espionage posters have even stated, “Report anyone who calls a television a ‘TV.’” Furthermore, Kim Jong-un used expressions like “sick person,” “harsh terrain,” “beverage,” and “denigrate,” which are rarely used in North Korea, where people typically say “weak person,” “difficult place,” “water,” and “slander” or “belittle.” The source criticized Kim Jong-un for telling the residents to use Pyongyang dialect while he himself openly uses South Korean terms.

“They set up kings without my consent; they choose princes without my approval. With their silver and gold, they make idols for themselves to their own destruction.” (Hosea 8:4)
ᅬ While ordinary residents are strictly prohibited from using South Korean expressions and are harshly punished if they do, including being sent to re-education camps, Kim Jong-un surprised many by using several South Korean expressions during a speech to flood victims. We pray that this incident will lead to the abolition of inhumane laws such as the Anti-Reactionary Thought and Culture Rejection Act and the Pyongyang Cultural Language Protection Act in North Korea.
ᅬ We pray that the Kim Jong-un regime, which maintains its dictatorial rule through deception and by blocking the people’s access to the outside world, will realize that the wave of freedom cannot be stopped and will move towards denuclearization and reform and opening.
ᅬ May North Korea also see the rise of leaders and a government that fear God, respect the lives and human rights of the people, and prioritize the welfare and livelihoods of the citizens.
