1.North Korea Faces Severe Power Shortages, but... Launching a Fecal Balloon Costs 100,000 Won Each
Article Summary
Our military estimates that it costs about 100,000 won to launch a single fecal balloon. Since May 28th, over the course of about a month, North Korea has launched approximately 2,400 fecal balloons using hydrogen gas. Hydrogen can be obtained as a byproduct of splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity or from refining petroleum. However, obtaining hydrogen gas is not an easy task for North Korea, given the severe power shortages and UN sanctions that limit oil supplies to 4 million barrels per year. It has been determined that not only soldiers but also North Korean civilians have been mobilized to fill these balloons. A military official explained that civilians were gathered to collect trash, cut paper to a certain size, and remove labels and caps from PET bottles. In 2020, North Korea also publicly showed civilians being mobilized to produce anti-South propaganda leaflets.
Prayer Topics
“They set up kings without my consent; they choose princes without my approval. With their silver and gold, they make idols for themselves to their own destruction.” (Hosea 8:4)
2. Kim Jong-un's 'Lifeline' at Risk... China's Thunderbolt Notification
Article Summary
It is reported that the Chinese authorities have requested the repatriation of North Korean workers, numbering from tens of thousands up to 100,000. North Korea prefers a phased return, but China plans to send them back all at once as their visas expire. This development shows signs of strain in the relationship between the two nations, which have traditionally emphasized their alliance. There is speculation that China has expressed displeasure over North Korea's close military ties with Russia. The deployment of North Korean workers abroad is a violation of UN Security Council resolutions and serves as a key method for North Korea to earn foreign currency, which is crucial for its nuclear and missile development programs. South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is closely monitoring the situation, emphasizing that this is a clear violation of Security Council resolutions and urging all UN member states to strictly implement these resolutions.
Prayer Topics
"The Lord Almighty has sworn, 'Surely, as I have planned, so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will happen. This is the hand stretched out over all nations. For the Lord Almighty has purposed, and who can thwart him? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?'" (Isaiah 14:26-27)

3. Educational Support for Children of North Korean Defectors Born in Third Countries... Ministry of Unification Announces Legislation
Article Summary
The Ministry of Unification has announced that, starting as early as the second half of next year, educational support will be extended to children of North Korean defectors born in third countries before entering South Korea. This support is part of the proposed amendments to the "Act on the Protection and Settlement Support of North Korean Escapees," which has been put forth for legislative notice. Under the current law, only 'North Korean defectors' are eligible for educational support, leaving 71% of school-age children from defector families who were born in third countries in a support blind spot. The amendment will allow children born in third countries to undergo the same academic credential recognition process as those born in North Korea. The Ministry plans to collect opinions on the amendment until the 6th of next month and then proceed with the necessary steps to submit the amendment to the National Assembly. If the amendment passes the National Assembly within this year, children of defectors born in third countries will be eligible for educational support starting from the second half of next year.
