July week2 Prayer for North Korea
1. "People’s Army 'Unit 448', Abducted Over 40 Japanese Citizens at Sea in the 1980s"
▶ ▶ Article Summary
In addition to the 17 officially recognized abductees by the Japanese government, it has been claimed that at least 40 more Japanese were abducted at sea. It is alleged that the Reconnaissance General Bureau of the People's Army targeted Japanese fishing boats operating alone at night, abducting only the young Japanese individuals and confining the rest in the cabin before sinking the vessel. Kim Seung-cheol, head of the North Korean Reform Radio, made these claims on a YouTube broadcast. Both North Korea and Japan have yet to officially acknowledge these maritime abductions, with most cases likely being classified as simple disappearances, according to John Brum, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Unification. However, the abduction of Japanese citizens at sea by North Korea is documented in the 2014 United Nations Commission of Inquiry (COI) report on human rights in North Korea. The report includes testimony from a former senior official of the Reconnaissance General Bureau, stating that the abductions occurred between midnight and 3 a.m., with North Korean ships disguised to resemble Japanese vessels. They would approach lone boats near the Japanese coast, abduct the youngest and smartest crew members, and then sink the vessel to drown the remaining crew. As of November 2021, only 5 of the 17 officially recognized Japanese abductees have returned home, and there are 873 individuals whose possible abduction by North Korea cannot be ruled out.

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.” (Proverbs 31:8)
ᅬ Testimonies have emerged stating that there are over 40 Japanese victims of maritime abductions by North Korea, and there are 873 people who cannot be ruled out as abducted by North Korea. In our country, there are 457 individuals unaccounted for due to fishing boat abductions (7/4 Radio Free Asia). Lord, may the UN and international community unite to address these inhumane crimes by North Korea, and may the truth be revealed.
ᅬ May the abducted victims quickly return to their homeland and families.
ᅬ May the severe human rights violations against North Korean residents and the abductions of South Koreans and foreigners be halted.
2. "North Korean Senior Officials Officially Wear ‘Kim Jong-un Badges’ for the First Time, Signaling the Full-Scale Idolization of His Independent Regime"
▶ ▶ Article Summary
Senior North Korean officials were seen wearing badges featuring Kim Jong-un's face alone for the first time. This was revealed during the Workers' Party plenary meeting on the 29th. It is the first time in his 12-year rule that the Kim Jong-un badge has appeared in public. These badges are expected to be gradually distributed to party members and the general population. The Kim Jong-un badge has appeared earlier in his rule compared to his predecessors. The Kim Il-sung badge appeared in 1970, 25 years after his rule began, and the Kim Jong-il badge appeared in 1992, 12 years into his rule, initially worn only by senior officials and later distributed to the general population in the 2000s. Until the emergence of the Kim Jong-un badge, badges featuring both Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il were used. The introduction of the Kim Jong-un badge is interpreted as an effort to erase the influence of his predecessors and accelerate the idolization of his independent regime. In May, portraits of Kim Jong-un were seen hanging in public institutions, and in April, North Korean media referred to Kim Il-sung’s birthday, known as 'Day of the Sun,' as simply 'April 15th' or 'April Holiday.' The emergence of the Kim Jong-un badge suggests a shift towards a more antagonistic two-state theory, the revival of the presidential system, and the advancement of nuclear capabilities.

“They set up kings without my consent; they choose princes without my approval. With their silver and gold, they make idols for themselves to their own destruction.” (Hosea 8:4)
ᅬ In April, North Korean media downplayed Kim Il-sung’s birthday by referring to it as ‘April 15th,’ and in May, Kim Jong-un’s portrait was seen hanging alongside Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il in public institutions. Recently, senior officials were publicly seen wearing badges featuring Kim Jong-un's portrait, signaling the full-scale idolization of his independent regime. Lord, may the idolization of Kim Il-sung's Juche ideology, the deification of the regime, and the three-generation Kim family dictatorship come to a swift end.
ᅬ As Kim Jong-un erases the unification policies of his predecessors and establishes a hostile two-state theory, advancing nuclear capabilities and reinforcing a unification policy by force, help our country to establish a proper security stance and take strategic steps towards improving North Korean human rights and achieving unification under a free and democratic system.
ᅬ May the South Korean church become more vigilant and cry out for the freedom, liberation, and salvation of the suffering North Korean people.
3. "North Korea's 'Ideological Education' Recall of Overseas Students May Lead to Increased Defections"
▶ ▶ Article Summary
This month, political training related to Kim Jong-un's regime is scheduled to take place at venues such as the Pyongyang People's Study House. The recall of overseas students is likely intended to involve the younger generation in this political training. In the past, before COVID-19, the North Korean regime periodically called students back to Pyongyang for ideological education, fearing they might be influenced by the outside world. Lee Hyun-seung, a North Korean defector who studied in China and is a graduate of Pyongyang University of Foreign Studies, suggested that this might be an attempt to prevent young elites from defecting. He noted that the authorities might use the excuse that the students are ideologically unprepared to prevent them from leaving again, and that the students themselves might fear whether they could adapt to life in North Korea again, leading some to preemptively decide to defect. Additionally, recalled students might be punished as an example for neglecting their studies, engaging in romantic relationships, or for their behavior. Following the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and the opening of borders, the replacement of overseas diplomats and representatives has intensified, leading to the defection of about ten elites last year. The South Korean government is closely monitoring whether the recall of North Korean students will lead to additional defections.

“I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy. I will shepherd the flock with justice.” (Ezekiel 34:16)
ᅬ May the North Korean people become aware of the contradictions and severe inhumanity of the North Korean regime through information from the outside world and the gospel of Jesus, and develop a consciousness for freedom and human rights.
ᅬ May the North Korean regime realize that it can no longer cover the sky with its palm, stop its false propaganda, and move towards reform and openness. May all anti-human rights laws in North Korea, such as the Reactionary Thought and Culture Rejection Act and the Pyongyang Culture Language Protection Act, be abolished.
ᅬ For those currently risking their lives to defect by various means, may the Lord protect them as the apple of His eye, granting them freedom and allowing them to hear the gospel of Jesus and find true freedom for their souls.
