June week4 Prayer for North Korea
1. North Hwanghae Province Residents on High Alert Searching for Leeches... What’s Going On?
▶ ▶ Article Summary
Residents of North Hwanghae Province in North Korea are desperately searching for leeches and earthworms to earn money. Smugglers from Yanggang Province, a border area, are buying leeches to export to China. These smugglers are conducting business not only in North Hwanghae Province but also across North Korea, including South Hamgyong Province. Dried leeches can fetch between 38 and 55 yuan per 100 grams, depending on their size. A source reported, "Even children are skipping school to catch leeches. Although their skin often gets red and swollen from leech bites, they forget the pain in their effort to catch more and earn more money." The source added that while mixing earthworms with leeches was previously not an issue, the increased scrutiny of Chinese inspections means that any presence of earthworms now results in the rejection of the goods, making it increasingly difficult for both catchers and buyers to make money.
▶ ▶ Prayer Points
"He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save the needy from death." (Psalm 72:13)
ᅬ Lord, have mercy on the North Korean people, including young children, who are forced to catch leeches and risk being bitten just to survive. Please provide daily sustenance for the North Korean people and protect their lives and health until they can freely believe in Jesus through the reunification of the Korean peninsula.
ᅬ May North Korea soon see the establishment of leaders and a government that respects the lives and human rights of its residents and prioritizes their welfare, food, clothing, and shelter.
ᅬ Ensure that the North Korean people have access to nutritious food so that they do not suffer from starvation or malnutrition. Especially protect North Korean children, allowing them to play innocently, study properly in school, and receive appropriate care and protection as they grow up.
2. North Korea and Russia Formalize Defiance of Sanctions... "Oppose Unilateral Coercive Measures"
▶ ▶ Article Summary
The comprehensive strategic partnership treaty between North Korea and Russia, unveiled by North Korea on the 20th, includes a clause opposing the application of "unilateral coercive measures." This is interpreted as a reference to the UN Security Council's sanctions imposed on North Korea for its nuclear and missile development. The treaty states that the North Korean and Russian leaders aim to develop exchanges and cooperation in fields such as space, nuclear energy, and information technology. Russia providing North Korea with satellite technology or highly enriched uranium for weapons through nuclear cooperation would violate these sanctions. Experts believe that Russia, which has previously facilitated arms transactions with North Korea in defiance of sanctions, is now openly declaring its intention not to comply with them in written form. Despite voting in favor of North Korea sanctions in 2016-2017, Russia is now seen as potentially enabling North Korea's nuclear development. Jeon Seong-hoon, former president of the Korea Institute for National Unification, stated that with Russia's open defiance of sanctions, half of the previously weak link in the sanction enforcement — China and Russia — has now completely broken. As a result, the security strategy framework may need significant changes, and trade between North Korea and Russia is expected to increase.
▶ ▶ Prayer Points
"They encourage each other in evil plans, they talk about hiding their snares; they say, 'Who will see it?' They plot injustice and say, 'We have devised a perfect plan!' Surely the human mind and heart are cunning. But God will shoot them with his arrows; they will suddenly be struck down." (Psalm 64:5-7)
ᅬ Pray for the illegal alliance between North Korea and Russia, which is threatening peace on the Korean Peninsula and the surrounding region by defying UN-imposed sanctions, to self-destruct and become ineffective.
ᅬ As the North Korea-Russia treaty prompts discussions of nuclear armament on the Korean Peninsula in the United States, pray for wisdom and proper judgment for South Korea to strengthen its security posture. May God, the sovereign ruler of history and the protector of South Korea, oversee and safeguard the nation's defense and security.
3. China Responds to Concerns Over Forced Repatriation of North Korean Defectors: "Should Not Be Politicized"
▶ ▶ Article Summary
On June 19, China argued that parties involved are politicizing the issue of North Korean defectors and creating obstacles in handling the matter. This statement follows a request from the South Korean government during the June 18th Korea-China Foreign and Security Dialogue in Seoul, where concerns about the forced repatriation of North Korean defectors were raised. South Korea asked for China’s cooperation to ensure that defectors are not forcibly returned and can go to their desired destinations. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded, "There are no so-called 'defectors' in China. Those who illegally enter China for economic reasons are not refugees." Lin emphasized that China's approach consistently integrates domestic law, international law, and humanitarian principles, and urged related parties not to politicize the issue or create obstacles for China in handling it.
▶ ▶ Prayer Points
“Then Asa called to the Lord his God and said, ‘Lord, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, Lord our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this vast army. Lord, you are our God; do not let mere mortals prevail against you.’” (2 Chronicles 14:11)
ᅬ Pray for the hearts of Xi Jinping and other responsible officials to be moved so that China will comply with the UN Refugee Convention and the UN Convention Against Torture, cease the forced repatriation of North Korean defectors, and recognize them as refugees under the UN.
ᅬ As North Korea and Russia disregard sanctions and strengthen their alliance in sensitive areas such as military, energy, and food, pray that China joins the international community in condemning these actions and handles the issue of North Korean defectors appropriately, fulfilling its role as a leader in maintaining regional peace.
ᅬ May the swift realization of free and democratic reunification ensure that no more North Korean residents risk their lives to escape the massive prison that is North Korea, and that they are not subjected to horrific torture and forced labor upon forced repatriation.
