June week1 Prayer for North Korea
1. North Korea's Dilemma with Propaganda Leaflets... Retaliation Costs Money, Ignoring Loses Credibility
On the night of June 22, 2020, a balloon sent by a defector group in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, carrying anti-North Korea leaflets, fell in a mountainous area near Magok-ri, Seomyeon, Hongcheon-gun, the next day. ⓒ Yonhap News
▶ ▶ Article Summary:
North Korea launched a large number of balloons filled with waste across the country in the middle of the night. Following this, provocations continued with GPS signal jamming in the West Sea and missile launches in the East Sea. These unusually aggressive simultaneous provocations were a response to the South Korean side's dispatch of anti-North Korea leaflets. North Korea had previously announced that it would retaliate against the leaflet launches by South Korean civilian groups. Kim Yo-jong also reacted sensitively, saying, "We will respond to the trash sent by South Korea several dozen times per incident," indicating the increasing impact of the leaflets. The Wall Street Journal quoted Professor Kang Dong-wan, stating that "the North Korean regime feels more threatened than ever," raising concerns that the leaflets could lead to ideological changes and decreased loyalty to the regime. Meanwhile, since North Korea has issued a retaliatory statement, it has no choice but to take high-intensity measures, which are costly. A single short-range ballistic missile costs up to 6.8 billion won. With more than 10 short-range ballistic missiles fired this time, over 70 billion won has been spent. Even if North Korea engages in psychological warfare through balloon provocations, the effect is minimal compared to the anti-North Korea leaflets. However, experts emphasize that we must not let our guard down, as the situation would change if North Korea attaches small bombs or toxic gas capsules to the balloons, increasing anxiety among border area residents.

▶ ▶ Prayer Points:
"Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright." (Psalm 20:7-8)
ᅬ North Korea retaliated against our civilian groups' leaflet launches by sending hundreds of waste balloons across the country, launching over 10 missiles, and conducting simultaneous aggressive provocations such as signal jamming. Pray for the immediate cessation of these violations of the armistice agreement and for North Korea to return to normal diplomatic channels.
ᅬ Pray for God's protection over our citizens so that no one suffers any harm or difficulties due to North Korea's provocations. Especially, help the residents of border areas to live in peace and safety.
ᅬ Last week, North Korea launched more than 10 short-range ballistic missiles, costing over 70 billion won. While the residents suffer from food shortages, the Kim Jong-un regime wastes national finances on provocations to maintain the regime. Pray for the South Korean government to respond appropriately to prevent such provocations in the future.
2. Yoon Requests Cooperation on North Korean Defector Issue... Li Qiang: "We Understand Your Concerns"
▶ ▶ Article Summary:
On the 27th, President Yoon Suk-yeol held a separate meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, requesting cooperation on the issue of North Korean defectors. Amid ongoing controversy over China's forced repatriation of defectors, President Yoon conveyed his concerns to Premier Li, apart from the South Korea-Japan-China summit. Premier Li responded, saying, "China has been working towards a peaceful resolution of the Korean Peninsula issue and considers stability important. We understand South Korea's concerns and will continue to communicate." According to the presidential office, major media outlets in China and Japan reported that the trilateral summit would significantly help ease the recently tense relations among the three countries.

▶ ▶ Prayer Points:
"Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter." (Proverbs 24:11)
ᅬ We are grateful that President Yoon conveyed concerns about China's forced repatriation of North Korean defectors to Premier Li Qiang. Pray that China adheres to the UN Convention Against Torture and the UN Refugee Convention, thereby stopping the forced repatriation of defectors.
ᅬ May our nation strengthen cooperation among South Korea, the U.S., and Japan while maintaining harmonious diplomatic relations with China. Grant wisdom to the President and related officials to manage all situations and conditions. Pray that China shifts away from its pro-North Korea stance and plays a constructive role in addressing North Korean human rights and denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, contributing to regional peace.
ᅬ Pray that the recent South Korea-Japan-China summit leads to the restoration of regular trilateral meetings and accelerates discussions on a free trade agreement (FTA). May the agreements be well implemented, bringing political stability and economic benefits to Northeast Asia.
3. Defacing Kim Il-sung Monument and Threatening to Oust Kim Jong-un... Anti-Regime Group Releases Video from Pyongyang
▶ ▶ Article Summary:
A new anti-regime organization based overseas has emerged, releasing a video showing a man splashing ink on a monument believed to be dedicated to Kim Il-sung, with red graffiti. The organization, likely formed last year and named "New Joseon," announced, "We will destroy the traces of the Kim family, which have become more numerous than gravestones." They describe themselves as a resistance government of secret warriors from various sectors, aiming to liberate the nation and people unlawfully taken by the Supreme Leader's dictatorship. In a statement last month, they declared their top priority to be ending the Kim family's hereditary rule, with Kim Jong-un being the only target for political reform in New Joseon. They emphasized that their war against dictatorship is not intended for South Korean annexation and that they plan to maintain the current administrative system and officials' positions after removing Kim Jong-un. They also claimed to have established contact with another anti-regime group inside North Korea and to be assisting key figures in defecting through foreign connections. Additionally, they disclosed reports about the cannibalism crimes in North Korea. The National Intelligence Service stated, "We are aware of this organization, but the exact identity and scale have not been determined."

▶ ▶ Prayer Points:
"They set up kings without my consent; they choose princes without my approval. With their silver and gold, they make idols for themselves to their own destruction." (Hosea 8:4)
ᅬ Pray for the anti-regime organizations resisting the North Korean dictatorship, both inside and outside North Korea. May the Lord oversee their efforts and restore North Korea, stained by the sin of idolizing the Kim family, to a nation that pleases God.
ᅬ Lord, bring a swift end to the pseudo-religious ideology of Kim Il-sung's Juche and the idolization of the Kim family. May the three-generation hereditary dictatorship be completely dismantled, and may North Korea be led by leaders who respect the freedom and human rights of its people, prioritizing their basic needs and well-being.
