May week4 Prayer for North Korea
1. Fearing Forced Repatriation, Defectors Give Up on Going to South Korea… "We Will Find a Way to Live in China"
▶ ▶ Article Summary:
The recent news of forced repatriation has spread among North Korean defectors in China, leading to a growing sentiment of giving up on going to South Korea. According to a source familiar with North Korean affairs in China, the reports of repatriation have quickly reached the defectors there, causing many to abandon their plans to go to South Korea out of fear and anxiety. Previously, some defectors had decided to seek brokers to help them reach South Korea for a safer life, rather than continuing to live as illegal immigrants in China. After the mass repatriation of defectors by China in October, there was a temporary sense of relief, with some believing that international criticism had been effective. However, recent reports in South Korea regarding forced repatriation have reversed the situation drastically. Public security officials in China are reportedly encouraging defectors to stay quiet and live discreetly, assuring them they won't be arrested if they don't commit crimes, which is further fueling the decision to give up on going to South Korea.

▶ ▶ Prayer Points:
“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.” (Proverbs 31:8)
○ "Lord, have mercy on North Korean defectors living in fear and anxiety in China as illegal immigrants. May China comply with the UN Refugee Convention and the UN Convention Against Torture to stop the forced repatriation of defectors."
○ "Lord, let the oppressive regime in North Korea collapse soon so that North Koreans no longer have to risk their lives to defect and live in hiding in fear in China."
○ "Protect the lives and health of defectors detained in China and those forcibly repatriated. May they hear the gospel of Jesus through other defectors who believed first and receive salvation."
2. North Korea Trades Old Weapons for New Weapon Parts with Russia
▶ ▶ Article Summary:
On the 11th, North Korea announced plans to deploy new 240mm multiple rocket launchers aimed at the Seoul metropolitan area to frontline military units starting this year. Approximately 200 units of the 240mm rocket launcher, known for its role in North Korea's threats to turn Seoul into a "sea of fire," have been deployed to North Korean frontline units. North Korea stated that on the 10th, Kim Jong-un inspected the new 240mm rocket weapon system and observed test firing of guided rockets. The regime plans to complete the implementation of an automated comprehensive firing command system in the Korean People's Army by 2026. Following their announcement in February about developing the new guided 240mm rocket launchers, North Korea has been accelerating its weaponization efforts. If North Korea's claims of successful guidance are accurate, the 240mm rocket launchers' range and accuracy could be improved. Analysts suggest that Kim Jong-un's unusual direct involvement in the test firing of conventional weapons, rather than strategic new weapons, indicates these might be export weapons intended for Russia. Intelligence agencies have detected that North Korea has supplied Russia with outdated weapons, including the 122mm multiple rocket launchers produced in the 1970s. Additionally, North Korea has been smuggling parts from overseas in violation of UN sanctions to develop new weapons, prompting authorities to track these activities. The National Intelligence Service stated, "We are continuously tracking all military cooperation matters between North Korea and Russia."

▶ ▶ Prayer Points:
"Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm." (Psalm 20:7-8)
○ "Lord, may the military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, which violates UN Security Council sanctions, self-destruct and become ineffective."
○ "The battle belongs to God. Lord, be the defense and security of South Korea, protecting this nation from North Korea's nuclear and missile threats and ambitions of domination. May South Korea also lead the way in global peace."
3. North Korea Plants Mines and Builds Guard Posts at the Armistice Line… Border? Blocking Defection outes?
▶ ▶ Article Summary:
Since April, North Korea has been mobilizing heavy equipment and troops to plant mines and build structures such as guard posts throughout the northern side of the Armistice Line. This is the first time since the 1953 Armistice Agreement that heavy equipment has been used to plant mines in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), and it is a violation of the Armistice Agreement as it was done without prior consultation with the United Nations Command in South Korea. North Korea has been planting mines in the northern areas adjacent to Goseong in Gangwon Province, Cheorwon, and Yeoncheon in Gyeonggi Province, and recently in the northern areas of the western front DMZ. Approximately 1,000 troops have been mobilized over the past month. This action follows Kim Jong-un's statement in January to "strictly implement phased measures to completely separate all North-South linkage conditions in the border areas." The military authorities are analyzing whether North Korea aims to create a "border line" or to block defector routes, as the additional mine planting areas are mostly in mountains and along streams. A Joint Chiefs of Staff official stated, "Our military is closely tracking and monitoring the activities of the North Korean military, maintaining a firm military readiness posture, and closely cooperating with the United Nations Command."

▶ ▶ Prayer Points:
"Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain." (Psalm 127:1)
○ "Lord, since Kim Jong-un declared last year that inter-Korean relations are hostile between two countries, North Korea has been planting mines in the DMZ with heavy equipment and about 1,000 troops. May our military closely cooperate with the United Nations Command, meticulously monitor North Korean military activities, and maintain a solid defense posture."
○ "Experts analyze that North Korea's designation of inter-Korean relations as hostile between two countries is an attempt to strengthen internal control as the regime faces increasing threats due to the influx of South Korean culture. During these times, may the church and believers stay vigilant in prayer, preparing for the salvation of North Korea and the unification of the peninsula through the gospel."
○ "May the Juche ideology, idolization, and deification system, and the three-generation hereditary dictatorship in North Korea, which has been selected as one of the world's top ten religions, come to an end soon. May the armistice situation of armed confrontation swiftly come to an end through the gospel-driven democratic unification prepared by God."
