May week3 Prayer for North Korea
1. Inside North Korea: Elderly Hungry for Rice Cause Disturbance at Government Offices, Police Force Deployed to Contain Situation
▶ ▶ Article Summary:
In late March, it was reported that a commotion occurred as elderly individuals gathered at government offices in Hyesan City, Yanggang Province, demanding rice, prompting the deployment of riot police. The incident reportedly began with a bold act by an elderly woman on March 29th, who was struggling with poverty. A correspondent stated, "(The grandmother) went to the administrative office and said, 'It is not possible to think the leader (Kim Jong-un) let the people starve to death. Aren't the officials taking everything for themselves in the middle and not providing food? I have nothing to eat right now, so give me rice immediately.'" The officials reluctantly provided a small portion of food to her because of her confident demeanor and even mentioning 'the leader'. However, the situation escalated as elderly individuals who heard that the grandmother gained food flocked to administrative offices, town halls, people's committees, and grain distribution centers, demanding food, prompting authorities to summon children to bring their parents to the offices. Later, it was claimed that when not only the elderly but also residents facing food shortages united, riot police were dispatched to intervene. Authorities labeled the grandmother who initiated the incident as a 'confused old person' spreading rumors and took measures to prevent a recurrence of the issue, promising to identify those spreading the rumors and create a climate of fear. Following this incident, it was announced that disseminating rumors and criticizing officials and party policies would be punished as anti-socialist acts.

▶ ▶ Prayer Points:
"He will have compassion on the poor and needy, and the lives of the needy he will save." (Psalm 72:13)
○ Lord, like the words of the North Korean grandmother who said, "There's no way the leader let people starve to death," normal leaders cannot ignore starving citizens. Lord, may normal leaders and regimes that prioritize the welfare and livelihoods of their citizens be established even in the northern land.
○ Lord, have mercy on the North Koreans suffering from food shortages. Provide them with daily bread from Your own hand, and protect their lives and health until the day of Gospel unification, when they can freely believe in Jesus.
2. "North Korean Nuclear Scientists: Lavish Treatment? Living and Dying as Slaves of Bombs"
▶ ▶ Article Summary:
North Korea, known for its dedication to nuclear and missile development, purportedly favors nuclear scientists to the extent that Kim Jong-un himself reportedly carries individuals assumed to be responsible for defense science and technology on his back after observing ground combustion testing of a new high-power rocket engine at the West Sea Satellite Launch Site in March 2017. However, analysis from a Korean Peninsula expert in Washington, D.C., challenges this narrative. Robert Collins, who served as a top strategist for the U.S.-ROK Combined Forces Command, revealed in a report that North Korean nuclear scientists are essentially predetermined from elementary school as individuals with no autonomy over their life paths, forced to work for 'the country's mission' in an inhuman situation where failure means death in a society where failure is synonymous with disloyalty. The report shed light on the human rights violations of these individuals, stating that over 100 graduates of the Phyongsong Physics Specialization University, who work at nearby Yongbyon nuclear facilities, have been exposed to radiation, leading to mental illness, infertility, birth defects, and successive deaths among family members. Many defectors from related fields have reported various 'occupational diseases' such as leukopenia, hepatitis, orchitis, and nephritis due to toxic gas and radiation exposure. Workplaces vary depending on their backgrounds, and the economic conditions of many nuclear scientists are unstable. It is also widely known that they are under significant surveillance and control by the party due to the nature of the North Korean regime. However, Collins acknowledged that since Kim Jong-un came to power, there has been a climate of tolerating failures in the process of weapons development, including nuclear and missile programs.

▶ ▶ Prayer Points:
"‘Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan, I will now arise,’ says the LORD. ‘I will protect them from those who malign them.’” (Psalm 12:5)
○ Lord, there are reports from a Korean Peninsula expert in the U.S. that nuclear scientists, who were believed to be favored in North Korean society, are actually dying as victims of toxic gas and radiation exposure, suffering from mental illness, infertility, birth defects, and various diseases. Heal these nuclear scientists and workers exposed to radiation in North Korean nuclear facilities with Your rays of healing. Bring swift closure to North Korean nuclear facilities operating in secret without adhering to international safety standards.
○ May the international community, including South Korea, the United States, and others, address the human rights issues of key figures in North Korea's nuclear program head-on, ensuring that those responsible for these inhumane programs pay a just price, and may the sacrifices of many, including nuclear scientists, contribute to ending the inhumane North Korean nuclear development program.
3. North Korea: "Promote the Use of Pyongyang Dialect"… Blocking "Southern Speech"
▶ ▶ Article Summary:
North Korea continues to enforce crackdowns on the language and writing used by residents, urging them to "actively use the Pyongyang dialect." In an article titled "Language Life and Character" published on the 5th by Rodong Sinmun, it was stated, "All members of society should actively contribute to establishing a healthy and noble cultural life of our own and promoting socialist civilization construction by cultivating language life with cultural sensibility." It further emphasized, "Even if you speak a word or write a line, it should be done according to the standard of the Pyongyang dialect, overflowing with the spirit of Korean national supremacy while maintaining a noble moral character." The authorities' insistence on residents observing language etiquette and actively using the Pyongyang dialect is interpreted as part of ideological control, including blocking the spread of South Korean culture. With the influx and spread of South Korean films, dramas, and other visual materials within North Korea, South Korean-style speech patterns, such as addressing husbands as 'oppa' or boyfriends as 'namchin' (boyfriend), have become widespread. In response, North Korea enacted the Pyongyang Dialect Protection Law at the Supreme People's Assembly held last January, imposing strict control measures, including the possibility of maximum punishment up to execution for those using 'hostile' (South Korean) speech.

▶ ▶ Prayer Points:
"They set up kings without my consent; they choose princes without my approval. With their silver and gold, they make idols for themselves to their own destruction." (Hosea 8:4)
○ Lord, it's reported that North Korea has elevated the punishment level, up to the maximum penalty of execution, for those using South Korean-style speech, referring to it as 'hostile' speech. Have mercy on the North Koreans who cannot even speak freely under the control and coercion of Kim Il-sung's three-generation hereditary dictatorship.
○ May oppressive laws of the North Korean Kim Jong-un dictatorship, such as the Pyongyang Dialect Protection Law and the Law Against Anti-Dongsaeng Ideology and Culture, be repealed. Help North Korean authorities realize that the desire for freedom among residents cannot be confined even by state surveillance and oppression, and lead them to respect the freedom and human rights of the people through reform and openness.
