1. Title: Beyond Utopia: Cast and Defectors Hold Joint Protest at North Korean Embassy
▶ ▶ Article Summary:
The cast of the documentary "Beyond Utopia," which portrays the journey of North Korean defectors, including Pastor Kim Sung-eun and Ms. Lee So-yeon, participated in a joint protest on the 19th in front of the North Korean Embassy in the UK with North Korean defectors Kim Yubin and Gyuri. Among the protesters was Kim's sister, who has been campaigning for her brother's rescue since he was forcibly repatriated from China last year. Six individuals, including the Kim sisters, held banners reading "Save my brother. Send him back to his family." before the North Korean Embassy. Previously, the younger sister, Cheol-ok, went to China through a broker in 1998 to meet her older sisters who defected, only to be sold to an older Chinese man and gave birth to a daughter at the age of 16. Cheol-ok, who spent 25 years in China, still has her daughter and young grandson there. The cast of "Beyond Utopia" visited London to attend the British Academy Awards the day before and joined the protest. Lee So-yeon attempted to bring her son back from North Korea but learned that he was detained and held in a North Korean prison. Although he did not receive an award at the film festival, he hopes to raise more awareness about North Korean human rights. He hopes that as the film becomes more known, there will be a greater chance for his son to live and hopes to help stop human rights abuses in North Korea. Meanwhile, passersby showed their support for the protest by applauding or honking their horns.

"For you are their stronghold in times of trouble, a defender of the helpless." (Psalm 9:9)
○ Lord, may China now comply with the UN Convention against Torture and stop the forced repatriation of North Korean defectors, leading them out of the dire status of being labeled as one of the worst human rights violators.
○ Bring down the giant prison that is North Korea. Bring an end to the idolatrous regime of the Kim family and the cult-like deification of Kim Il-sung's Juche ideology.
○ Protect the lives and health of North Korean defectors detained and forcibly repatriated to China. Through fellow believers among them, may they hear and receive the gospel of Jesus for their salvation.
2. Defectors Welcome "North Korean Defectors' Day"… "A Message of Hope for North Korean Residents"
▶ ▶ Article Summary
In response to the South Korean government designating July 14th as "North Korean Defectors' Day" in commemoration of the enactment of the "Law on the Protection and Settlement Support for North Korean Defectors" in 1997, defectors within South Korea expressed their hopes for improved treatment and perception of North Korean defectors within the country as well as for spreading a message of freedom and reunification to North Korean residents. Reverend Kim Sung-eun and Lee So-yeon, cast members of the documentary "Beyond Utopia," were among those who conveyed their collective welcome. Dr. Choe Kyung-hee, known as the first North Korean defector to receive a Ph.D. overseas, emphasized that the designation of North Korean Defectors' Day sends a message not only of South Korea's acceptance of defectors but also of its remembrance and support for North Korean residents. Park Yeon-mi, a human rights activist based in the United States, described defectors as individuals who risked their lives to seek freedom in South Korea and hoped that the commemoration would prompt South Koreans to reconsider the importance of freedom and correct any discrimination or prejudice against defectors. Park Ji-hyun, co-representative of "Bridging the Divide," an organization advocating for North Korean human rights in the UK, expressed her wish for North Korean Defectors' Day to also serve as a day of remembrance for innocent North Korean residents who died under the regime of the Kim family, akin to Holocaust Remembrance Day. She noted that July 14th marks the beginning of the French Revolution when French citizens stormed the Bastille prison, symbolizing a hope that defectors can aid in the liberation of North Korean residents from the oppressive regime. The Ministry of Unification also plans to establish memorials and parks to commemorate North Korean defectors who sacrificed during the defection process.[

"But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance." (Genesis 45:7)
○ We thank You, Lord, for the South Korean government's designation of North Korean Defectors' Day on July 14th, aiming to improve the treatment and perception of defectors within South Korea and to instill hope for freedom and reunification among North Korean residents. May this occasion not only raise awareness among South Koreans but also prompt them to pay attention to the ongoing enslavement of our compatriots under the North Korean dictatorship.
○ May the designation of North Korean Defectors' Day lead to a deeper understanding of the identity, belonging, and pride of North Korean defectors as South Korean citizens. Eradicate discrimination and unjust biases against defectors, especially in areas such as employment.
○ Enable churches and believers to embrace defectors as family members, sharing life with them so that they may adapt well to South Korean society. May defectors find ultimate freedom and peace through believing in Jesus Christ, becoming valuable vessels for North Korean and global missions.
3. Strikes by North Korean Laborers in China Mark the Beginning of a "North Korean Labor Movement"
▶ ▶ Article Summary:
Approximately 2,000 laborers dispatched by a North Korean defense ministry-affiliated trading company staged a strike due to prolonged unpaid wages, leading to riots. They occupied medical manufacturing and seafood processing factories in Jilin Province, China, and despite efforts by North Korean authorities, including the mobilization of consular and state security personnel, a management representative from North Korea involved in the dispute reportedly died from assault. Researcher Tak Min-ji from the Unification Research Institute pointed out that this collective action goes beyond individual acts seen among North Korean overseas laborers, indicating a significant departure from the norms of the North Korean regime, where organizing and expressing a unified voice was previously unimaginable. This development was emphasized as profoundly shocking in a society like North Korea, where freedom of assembly and protest is severely suppressed. Furthermore, the direct demand for accountability from North Korean authorities by the striking laborers suggests a new trend where North Korean citizens are explicitly expressing dissatisfaction and establishing the concept of a "state infringing on our rights." Reports indicated that while North Korean authorities paid outstanding wages, they only repatriated around half of the 200 or so leaders, roughly 5% of all participants. Tak interpreted this change in North Korea's attitude as a significant example indicating the loss of control over its populace by the regime. Considering the skilled nature of the striking participants, Tak speculated that North Korean authorities may not have been able to suppress them forcefully to maintain foreign currency earnings.

▶ ▶ Prayer Topics:
"Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert." (Isaiah 43:19)
○ The recent uprising of approximately 2,000 North Korean laborers in China against prolonged unpaid wages signifies an unprecedented change in North Korea's totalitarian society, where surveillance and control are strict. May there be increased influx of external information into North Korea's borders, igniting a strong desire for freedom and democracy among its residents.
○ Show compassion towards North Korean laborers exploited under harsh conditions. Bring about swiftly the gospel of freedom, democracy, and reunification prepared by the Lord, enabling North Korean compatriots to enjoy the rightful rewards for their labor. May the day come soon when North and South worship and serve Jesus freely together, enjoying the blessings of evangelism and missions.
