Feb week3 Prayer for North Korea
1. Serious Side Effects of North Korean Traditional Herbal Medicine
▶ ▶ Article Summary:
North Korean authorities have been modernizing North Korean traditional herbal medicine factories and expanding production to address the issue of medicine shortages. However, it has been reported that the verification of the efficacy and safety of the medicine is not systematically conducted, and the problem of side effects is serious. A source from Pyongan Province stated, "A total of 163 medical accidents that occurred in hospitals, clinics, and health institutions in the province over the past year were investigated." Among them, "130 cases were accidents due to misuse of drugs and narcotics, and 71% of them, totaling 93 cases, were accidents caused by side effects of North Korean traditional medicine." North Korea, faced with a shortage of medicines during the COVID-19 pandemic, has ordered the expansion of traditional medicine production as an alternative to vaccines or therapeutic drugs. During the party's plenary meeting at the end of last year, the modernization of traditional medicine factories was mentioned as one of the achievements for 2023. The problem lies in the fact that the efficacy of traditional medicine ingredients such as ginseng, licorice, and leaves of the boxwood tree is not properly verified, and these materials are not hygienically managed at pharmaceutical factories. Since the effects are not immediately apparent, there are cases where problems arise from taking more than the recommended amount, and even after the symptoms are relieved following intake, individuals may suffer from other diseases such as toxic hepatitis, according to sources.

▶ ▶Prayer Points
“He will rescue the poor when they cry to him; he will help the oppressed, who have no one to defend them.” (Psalm 72:13, NLT)
○ Lord, we pray for our North Korean brethren who, despite being unwell, have to rely on traditional medicine or narcotics with unverified efficacy and safety due to a lack of access to proper medication. May avenues be opened for ordinary citizens to obtain necessary medications in situations of medical shortages.
○ Also, we pray for our North Korean brethren in difficult circumstances, that they may be led to pray with faith in Jesus and experience God's healing. Through this, may the name of Jesus and the power of the Gospel be proclaimed.
○ May the Lord swiftly bring about the gospel unification of democracy, so that both North and South may freely believe in and worship Jesus, enjoying the blessings of preaching and missionary work. May our North Korean brethren receive medical welfare that allows them to receive appropriate treatment and prescriptions when they are unwell.
2. EU, Czech Republic, Canada: "North Korean Human Rights Still Poor... Continued Efforts Needed for Improvement"
▶ ▶ Article Summary
On the 10th anniversary of the release of the final report by the UN Commission of Inquiry (COI) on North Korean human rights, the European Union (EU), Czech Republic, and Canada pointed out that the human rights situation in North Korea remains poor. They emphasized the need for continued efforts to improve human rights in North Korea. On the 13th, an EU spokesperson, responding to questions from VOA regarding the achievements and challenges of the 10th anniversary of the COI report, stated that there were no signs that North Korea had taken constructive measures related to the findings of the COI report. Additionally, the EU condemned North Korea for its pervasive culture of impunity and the absence of accountability for human rights abuses and atrocities. The Czech government stated that the COI report played an important role in international efforts to urge North Korea to improve its human rights situation, including the direct product of the COI report, the Seoul UN Human Rights Office. Canada's Global Affairs expressed dismay at North Korea's prioritization of illegal mass destruction weapons and ballistic missile programs over the welfare of its citizens. The COI report, released on February 17, 2014, based on about a year of investigation, concluded that North Korea is committing systematic, widespread, and grave human rights abuses. It recommended referring those responsible for these crimes, or complicit in them, to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and other substantive measures, but so far, no substantive action has been taken.

"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute." (Proverbs 31:8, NIV)
○ We thank you, Lord, for the continuous voices raised by various countries, including the EU, Czech Republic, and Canada, for the improvement of human rights in North Korea. May international solidarity lead to the improvement of North Korea's poor human rights situation and the cessation of crimes against humanity.
○ May substantive actions be taken as recommended by the COI report, such as the referral by the UN Security Council of those responsible for the systematic crimes against humanity of the North Korean regime to the International Criminal Court (ICC) or the establishment of a UN-mandated tribunal to hold them accountable.
○ Canada has expressed dismay at North Korea's prioritization of illegal mass destruction weapons and ballistic missile programs over the welfare of its citizens. May North Korea swiftly become a country that protects the right to life and livelihood of its citizens and complies with international human rights standards. May the ongoing process of enacting North Korean Human Rights Act in Canada proceed smoothly.
3. "North Korea Startled by Korea-Cuba Diplomatic Relations... A Gesture Towards Japan"
▶ ▶ Article Summary:
Regarding the establishment of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Cuba, the South Korean Presidential Office stated on the 15th that it marks the final chapter of North Korea's "diplomatic socialism," which included friendly countries from the former Eastern Bloc. They emphasized that North Korea is likely to suffer significant political and psychological blows as a result. With the establishment of diplomatic relations with Cuba, South Korea has completed diplomatic relations with all countries in Central and South America. The Presidential Office viewed this diplomatic move as a clear demonstration of who holds the momentum in history and as an expansion of South Korea's diplomatic horizon as a "global central nation." The Presidential Office also noted that over the past two years since the inauguration of the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, multifaceted efforts have been made to establish diplomatic relations with Cuba. Except for China and Russia, Cuba is virtually the only friendly country to North Korea, and its diplomatic isolation is likely to deepen with South Korea establishing relations. Professor Park Won-gon of Ewha Womans University remarked that the establishment of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Cuba sends a message that North Korea must give up its nuclear weapons and engage with the international community to survive. In this context, North Korea extended a diplomatic gesture towards Japan. Kim Yo-jong, Deputy Director of the Workers' Party, hinted in her speech that a visit by the Japanese leader to Pyongyang may also be possible.

▶ ▶ Prayer Topics:
"For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ." (2 Corinthians 10:4-5, ESV)
○ The establishment of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Cuba sends a message that North Korea must give up its nuclear weapons and engage with the international community to survive. Lord, as Cuba, which has been North Korea's representative ally for half a century, chooses realistic diplomacy and establishes relations with our country, thus increasing North Korea's sense of isolation, may North Korea realize that reform and opening up are the only way forward.
○ May the false strongholds that cover North Korea, such as the Kim Il-sung ideology and the idolatrous personality cult, quickly crumble. Raise up righteous leaders and a government in North Korea who fear God, adopt economic policies that enrich the lives of the people, and move towards denuclearization and realistic diplomacy.
