Jan week5 Prayer for North Korea
1. Discontent among North Korean University Students Engaged in Social and Political Activities during Vacation
▶ ▶ Article Summary:
Reports suggest that university students in North Korea are expressing dissatisfaction with the requirement to engage in social and political activities, such as propaganda and support projects, even during their vacations. Sources in Pyongyang reveal that students nationwide have received instructions for economic mobilization to stimulate the national economy by participating in social and political activities in both urban and rural areas. Particularly, students from regional areas attending universities in Pyongyang reportedly abandon their hometowns during vacation, believing that engaging in activities in the capital city enhances their loyalty. To prove their involvement in social and political activities, students need to submit certificates, and those from affluent families allegedly bribe their way to obtain these certificates. The challenging situation for students without financial means and influence involves struggling with both daytime political activities and evening vacation assignments, including library visits and computer-based tasks requiring access to electricity.

▶ ▶Prayer Points
"They have set up kings, but not by me; they have appointed princes, but I knew it not. With their silver and gold, they made idols for their own destruction." (Hosea 8:4)
○ Pray for the students in North Korea, that they may have personal time during vacations and not be coerced into economic mobilization under the pretext of stimulating the national economy. Pray for the realization of freedom and democratic unification, allowing North Korean students to plan and live their lives with individual freedom, pursuing dreams and goals instead of being tools for maintaining the Kim family's three-generation dictatorship.
○ Pray for the influx of external world information among North Korean residents and the desire for freedom and democracy among the youth. Pray for the swift collapse of the Kim family's ideology and idolization regime in the North, leading to the establishment of conscientious and righteous leaders and government that align with the aspirations of the residents.
2. "Public Institutions Face 1.62 Million Hacking Threats Daily… 4 out of 5 Linked to North Korea"
▶ ▶ Article Summary
On the 24th, the National Intelligence Service held a press conference on the topic of 'Cyber Threat Trends and Response Activities.' Cyber attacks by state-backed and international hacking organizations targeting domestic public sectors increased by 36% from a year ago, reaching an average of 1.62 million attempts per day. Of these, North Korea accounted for 80%, while China was responsible for 5%. North Korean hacking organizations demonstrate a pattern of adjusting attack targets according to Kim Jong-un's directives and interests. When Kim Jong-un instructed the resolution of food shortages early last year, there was a concentrated attack on domestic agricultural and fisheries agencies, intercepting relevant data. Similarly, when emphasizing naval reinforcement in August and September of the same year, it was determined that domestic shipbuilding companies were hacked, compromising blueprints and design data. This year, concerns are raised that North Korea may disrupt society by incapacitating infrastructure such as finance and energy or civilian administrative services. With upcoming elections in over 50 countries, including our general election and the U.S. presidential election, the prospect of election interference operations through the spread of fake news and deepfake videos on social media or hacking election systems to sow national discord is expected to intensify.

3. "First 'China UPR Hearing' to be Held by U.S. Congress Next Month... Attention on Discussion of Forced Repatriation of North Korean Defectors"
▶ ▶ Article Summary:
The Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC), a bipartisan body under the U.S. Congress, will hold a hearing on February 1 on the topic of 'Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on China and the Human Rights Situation in China.' This marks the first time that a hearing to review the results of China's UPR is being held in the U.S. China, along with North Korea and Venezuela, has defended its human rights policies at the meeting, while the U.S., Canada, Japan, and many European countries expressed concerns about human rights activists, ethnic minorities, and religious persecution, calling for an immediate end to such abuses and the repeal of the Hong Kong security law. South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the Czech Republic raised the issue of the forced repatriation of North Korean defectors during this meeting. This is the first time that the South Korean government directly urged China to protect North Korean defectors in a UPR. The international community has consistently demanded the cessation of China's forced repatriation of North Korean defectors, but the Chinese government insists that these individuals are not refugees but people who illegally crossed the border for economic reasons, and it processes them according to international and domestic laws and the principles of humanitarianism.

○ Pray for the South Korean government, thanking them for urging the cessation of forced repatriation of North Korean defectors in a UPR for the first time. Pray that the South Korean government will continue to advocate for the protection of human rights for North Korean defectors until China shows a change in attitude, ensuring the safety and well-being of North Korean defectors, who are constitutionally recognized as South Korean citizens.
