Jan week3 Prayer for North Korea
1. "New Year's Allocation... North Korean Residents Engage in 'stealing human excrement'"
▶ ▶ Article Summary:
North Korea, where solving food-related issues is prioritized, collects manure from residents at the beginning of each new year, specifying the amount each person must contribute. In order to fulfill their quotas, residents resort to stealing human excrement from others, leading to what is known as 'human excrement battles.' According to Free Asia Broadcasting, factory and enterprise workers are assigned 600kg per person, while adolescents and others receive a quota of 300kg per person. These offerings, usually collected from human or livestock waste, lead to intense battles to meet the assigned quotas. Lee Sang-yong, the CEO of Daily NK, explained that incidents of unfortunate theft occur as individuals, fearing punishment for not fulfilling their quotas, resort to stealing human excrement from others. Additionally, North Korea is currently conducting battles to collect scrap iron for steel mills. As the new year begins, North Korean residents find themselves starting the year tired due to the annual struggles of food and scrap iron collection.

▶ ▶Prayer Points
"Because of the devastation of the afflicted, because of the groaning of the needy, now I will arise," says the Lord; "I will set him in the safety for which he longs." (Psalm 12:5)
○ Our North Korean compatriots in the northern part of the peninsula endure forced labor through battles such as food portion struggles and scrap iron collection at the beginning of each year. Lord, have mercy on our North Korean brethren.
○ May righteous leaders and authorities emerge in North Korea who prioritize the well-being of the people, safeguard their lives and health, and ensure their basic needs. Pray for the swift end of the oppressive rule of the three-generation dictatorship in North Korea.
2. "U.S. Experts: 'North Korea Seems to Have Decided on War... Korean Peninsula Situation as Dangerous as Pre-Korean War Era'"
▶ ▶ Article Summary
The situation on the Korean Peninsula is as dangerous as the period just before the Korean War, and the frequent mention of war by Kim Jong-un may not be mere bluster, according to U.S. experts. Researchers Robert Carlin and Professor Siegfried Hecker from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies stated that the situation on the Korean Peninsula is more perilous than at any time since the early days of June 1950. They believe that Kim Jong-un has made a strategic decision to go to war, similar to what his grandfather did in 1950. The breakdown of negotiations at the February 2019 Hanoi Summit was seen as a key factor in Kim Jong-un's decision to consider war. Disappointed by the breakdown and seemingly abandoning the goal of normalizing relations with the United States, Kim Jong-un has turned to strengthening cooperation with China and Russia, creating an opportunity and timing to pursue a military solution to the Korean Peninsula issue. The experts cautioned against the prevailing thought that "if North Korea attacks, they will completely destroy the North Korean regime," stating that such thinking could be fatal under the current circumstances. They also predicted that North Korea could exploit the weakest points in the military capabilities of South Korea, the U.S., and Japan, either psychologically or physically.

"For the horse is made ready for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the Lord." (Proverbs 21:31)
○ Despite the challenges and threats to the Korean Peninsula posed by North Korea's continuous military provocations and war threats, let us pray for God's miraculous protection over South Korea—a nation established by God's grace as a democracy, economically prosperous, and actively engaged in missionary efforts. Pray for God's protection against the threats of North Korea's nuclear weapons, missiles, biological weapons, cyber warfare, and psychological warfare.
○ Pray for the continuity of the solid South Korea-U.S.-Japan security alliance, unaffected by changes in leadership through elections in the United States and Japan. Pray for effective coordination among these nations in the face of potential conflict.
○ Lord, we earnestly pray that our nation, which experienced the tragic saturation of war during the Korean War (June 25, 1950), may not undergo a similar ordeal. Protect us from the shedding of innocent blood. May the preparations for God's predestined gospel-based unification of North and South happen swiftly, ending the ceasefire situation where brothers and sisters face each other with guns.
3. "South Korean Government Sends First Written Inquiry to China Ahead of UN Human Rights Review... Mentions Protection of North Korean Defectors"
▶ ▶ Article Summary:
Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul revealed on the 11th that the South Korean government has sent a written inquiry to China regarding the "Universal Periodic Review (UPR)" conducted by the UN against China. In the written inquiry, the government asked China about ▲Refugee application procedures accessible to defectors from overseas, including North Korea ▲Measures to protect and support female defectors from overseas, including those from North Korea, from human trafficking, forced marriage, and other forms of exploitation ▲Protection and support measures for children born to female defectors from overseas, including North Korea, in China. All member countries have undergone three reviews, and the fourth review has begun since 2022. Each member country can send queries in advance to the country undergoing review, and this is the first time South Korea has sent a pre-written inquiry to China since the system began. The government is also considering mentioning the issue of North Korean defectors during the on-site questioning against China, scheduled to take place in Geneva, Switzerland, on the 23rd.

"Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute." (Proverbs 31:8)
○ Pray that during the fourth regular human rights review against China in Geneva on the 23rd, both the South Korean government and many other nations will raise a strong voice on the issue of North Korean defectors. Pray for an undeniable international condemnation of China's forced repatriation of North Korean defectors, ensuring that China adheres to the principle of non-refoulement under the UN Convention against Torture.
○ Lord, may the oppressive ideologies of Kim Il-sung's Juche ideology and the idolatrous regime crumble swiftly in North Korea. Bring an end to the three-generation hereditary dictatorship of the Kim family. May North Korean compatriots not face the horrifying torture of forced repatriation, and may North Korean defectors in China be spared from any further suffering.
