Aug week3 Prayer for North Korea
1. "2600 North Korean Defectors in China Facing Forced Repatriation Crisis: 'Blocking Roads, Checking One by One'"
◆ Article Summary
Amid the closure of the North Korea-China border due to COVID-19, around 2600 North Korean defectors in China have been apprehended by authorities, facing the threat of forced repatriation. As the Asian Games in Hangzhou approaches, China has intensified its crackdown on defectors. A defector in the border region of Liaoning Province installed external CCTV cameras to evade Chinese security forces. Human rights activist Park Ji-hyun mentioned that Chinese authorities are conducting house-to-house searches for defectors due to rewards offered for information. Authorities are even blocking roads and verifying the identification of pedestrians. If forcibly repatriated, defectors could face inhumane treatment in prisons or detention centers. Kim Myeong-hee, who was forcibly repatriated three times, testified about severe human rights abuses she experienced after each repatriation. The South Korean embassy in China has stated that they will "handle the issue based on the principles of law and humanity," but has not provided concrete measures.

"Remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering," (Hebrews 13:3)
2. "Forcing Entry into New Rural Homes Despite the Lack of Basic Facilities Including Sewage Systems"
◆ Article Summary
While a labor newspaper reported on the joy of agricultural workers welcoming new homes on steep slopes on August 23rd, according to Daily NK sources, in some rural areas of North Korea's Hwanghae Province, residents have not moved in, and vacant homes are not uncommon. Despite this, the local People's Committees are pressuring people to move in by September 9th (the 75th anniversary of North Korea's regime establishment), even though sewage treatment facilities (septic tanks) are not in place. They have issued occupancy permits for new homes and held housewarming events without basic infrastructure. Moreover, even though the homes lack essential sewage systems, they are pressuring the heads of households from generations that have not moved in to join labor training units.
In one area of Goksan County, residents dug shallow holes in the backyards of their homes, about 0.5 meters deep, to allow household sewage from kitchens and bathrooms to flow in. However, residents say they can't use the makeshift holes for fear of overflowing. Shockingly, those who have moved into houses where the kitchen sewage pipes flow directly into nearby streams are reported to be living in environments teeming with flies and maggots. Additionally, residents are expected to install their own heating, tiling, and other facilities in the new homes.

"Rain down, you heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness; let the earth open, let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together. I, the Lord, have created it." (Isaiah 45:8)
3. "North Korea's 'Beloved Secret Weapon': 12,000-member Hacker Unit Sustains Regime"
◆ Article Summary
North Korea's hacker unit reportedly seized virtual currencies worth about 2.13 trillion won (approximately $1.9 billion) last year. Over the past five years, North Korea has allegedly stolen virtual assets amounting to around 4 trillion won (approximately $3.5 billion) for nuclear and missile development funds, according to The Wall Street Journal. In a recent hacking competition held in the United States, North Korean students swept the top four positions out of around 1,700 participants. Bloomberg Businessweek referred to North Korea's hacker unit as the regime's "lifeline" in the face of sanctions. Kim Jong Un has designated the hacker unit as one of the three main warfighting means, alongside nuclear and missiles.
The North Korean hackers are mostly affiliated with the Reconnaissance General Bureau, the Ministry of People's Armed Forces, and the State Security Department. Under the Reconnaissance General Bureau, there are world-class hacker organizations such as Lazarus, BlueNoroff, and Kimusuki, with their main tasks including military and diplomatic intelligence collection, espionage activities in South Korea, and obtaining foreign currency through virtual currency theft. Fox News reported that North Korea's cyber force consists of around 30,000 personnel, surpassing the CIA's capabilities. The selection process, training, and infiltration techniques of elite agents are rapidly evolving.
North Korea selects talented individuals with computer aptitude from their teenage years and provides them with special education. Kim Jong Un recently instructed to prioritize skill over background when selecting and training hackers, which is considered highly unusual in North Korea.
